Electoral College Song

U.S. History and Politics Songs

Every four years, we vote for a new president

We cast our votes for our favorite candidate

But popular vote does not decide the election

It’s decided by the Electoral College

A group of people, coming from all states

In total there are five hundred thirty eight

Number of electors, based on populate

When you vote, you’re choosing which candidate gets the electors in your state

So let’s say that you’re in Colorado and vote for the Democrat

And the majority of people pick that same candidate

Because Colorado, has nine electoral votes

Candidate “wins the state” and gets all nine votes added

And that’s the way, we vote, vote, vote

It’s 270 votes to win it

Electoral votes pick the president

And that’s the way, we vote, vote, vote

It’s 270 votes to win it

Electoral votes pick the president

To win you need electoral majority

The most electoral votes, minimum 270

The winner takes all, so in each state the winner keeps

Every single vote, other candidate they get nothing

Who are these electors? And how are they picked?

Each state party committee nominates them

Typically people, quite politically active

Connected to the party, officials, or sometimes activists

So when you cast your vote, actually goes, to electors in your state

This winner take all system means winning candidate takes

Every electoral vote, even if the win is narrow

Like in Texas, the winner gets all thirty eight

And that’s the way, we vote, vote, vote

It’s 270 votes to win it

Electoral votes pick the president

And that’s the way, we vote, vote, vote

It’s 270 votes to win it

Electoral votes pick the president
